Find in everyday life, an instance where you observe rates of chemical reactions. What is impacting the rate of the reaction?

For example, certain food is stored in the refrigerator to slow down the growth of bacteria. The lower temperature decreases the rate of production of the bacteria.

  1. A chemical reaction occurs when you wash your clothes. In the detergent is a molecule that has a polar head and a nonpolar tail. This molecule is then able to grab at the dirt and grim on your clothing (usually nonpolar) this attaches to the tail of the molecule that in return attaches to water in the washer with the polar head. The detergent is then able to remove grime and leave with the water. This rate can be effected by the temperature of the water and the amount of detergent. A higher temperature can increase the solubility of the grime increasing the rate of the reaction.

  2. A very important chemical reaction is aerobic cellular respiration. Glucose is converted into ATP, H2O, and CO2. If there is not enough oxygen present (perhaps during strenuous physical activity) to accept electrons at the end of the process this dramatically slows down the rate of ATP production. Fermentation then has to take place.

  3. An example of an observable chemical reaction found in everyday life would be cooking a meal. There is a few factors that impact the rate of reactions going on during the cooking. Addition of heat can speed up the reaction, addition of other substances can either increase or decrease the rate of the reaction and even the particles within the surrounding air can have an affect on the cooking time which we can technically think of as the reaction time.

    1. An example of reaction rates in everyday life is the speed with which antacids neutralize stomach acid.Taking two tablets neutralizes the acid more quickly than taking one tablet. This is due to the fact that an increased concentration of antacid molecules increase the rate of reaction, providing faster relief for those with acid reflux.

  4. One thing that comes to mind is the digestion of various substances that we eat on a day to day basis. The main reactants are the hydrochloric acid and food in the stomach which is catalyzed by various enzymes.

  5. Anaerobic respiration by yeast or bacteria is gathered for fermentation of wines, cheeses, yogurts, breads, and many other foods we eat. The rate of fermentation can be accelerated (catalyzed) by heat or decelerated by cooling. The higher the temperature, the faster the yeast changes sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. The rate of fermentation can be extremely slow, especially for a good wine. This is because a good wine requires a cooler temperature. Wines will sit in barrels fermenting for years to become just right, thus the rate of reaction is very slow for the fermentation of a good wine.

  6. An example of a chemical reaction is when iron oxides and turns to rust. Depending on the environment that this material may increase of decrease the rate of reaction. If the material is an area where it is exposed to oxygen, water, and heat then the rate of reaction may increase, whereas iron that is coated/painted with oil along with dry and cool temperatures may slow the rate of reaction.

  7. As we all might have noticed, in the last couple of weeks, are the leaves of the trees changing color. Leaves of deciduous trees change color in the fall because of a lack of chlorophyll in the cells. In order for the plant to produce chlorophyll requires water and sunlight which is slowly reduced in the fall. Once those factors are reduced, the chlorophyll in the leaves begins to break down, and it is not reproduced until spring when the trees come out of the dormant state from winter. Leaves contain natural pigments that don't break down, which is what is responsible for the wide variety of colors from yellows and oranges in leaves. Once the chlorophyll is gone, you'll see the natural colors in the leaves that were there all along. Fall is full of beauty. :)
