Discuss one aspect of a comparison of a voltaic cell and an electrolytic cell.

In other words, we want to compare and contrast these two types of cells. The first person to respond choose one aspect to discuss and then the next person choose another aspect, etc.

  1. Voltaic cells are spontaneous with a positive E-Cell value where as electrolytic cells are non-spontaneous with negative E-Cell values.

  2. The sign convention for Anodes and Cathodes are switched in Voltaic vs Electrolytic cells. In Voltaic cells Cathodes are positive while in Electrolytic cells they are negative.

  3. In both an electrolytic cell and voltaic cell oxidation occurs at the anode, while reduction occurs at the cathode.

  4. A voltaic cell spontaneously converts chemical energy to electrical energy while an electrolytic cell requires electrical energy to produce chemical change (electrolysis).

  5. Stoichometry can be used to calculate the amount of reactants consumed or products created in an electrolytic cell; however, these stoichiometry calculations are not performed for voltaic cells.

  6. Voltaic cells are spontaneous and produce voltage that moves backwards from the electron flow, whereas in the electrolytic cell stores the energy to be used later in a spontaneous way when desired, but not before work is done to first create the energy.

  7. voltaic cells are spontaneous and electrolytic are not spontaneous
